The latest premium chip from Qualcomm is here – the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4. This powerhouse is built using TSMC’s 4-nanometer tech and features the Kryo CPU core, a change from the Oryon core used in the Snapdragon 8 Elite.
The Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 packs an 8-core CPU, with a prime core, three performance cores, and four efficiency cores. The prime core is an ARM Cortex-X4 that can hit 3.2 GHz. The three performance cores are ARM Cortex-A720, with two running at 3.0 GHz and one at 2.8 GHz. The four efficiency cores are also ARM Cortex-A720, running at 2.0 GHz.
Performance Boost
Qualcomm claims this new chip is 31% faster and uses 39% less power than its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3. For graphics, it uses the Adreno 825 GPU, which is 49% faster than the one in the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3. This GPU supports ray tracing for more realistic lighting and features like Snapdragon Elite Gaming, including Snapdragon Game Super Resolution 2.0 for sharper graphics and Adreno Image Motion Engine 2.0 for smoother gameplay.
Key Features
Some other notable features of the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 include:
- A Qualcomm Hexagon NPU for AI processing, which is 44% faster
- An ISP that supports up to 320-megapixel cameras and 4K HDR video at 60fps
- A Snapdragon X75 5G modem with download speeds up to 4.2 Gbps on sub-6 GHz frequencies
- Support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0
- Support for UFS 4.0 storage, LPDDR5X RAM, and USB 3.1 Gen 2
- Qualcomm’s XPAN tech for extended personal area networks, which uses Wi-Fi for audio signals and is being used in devices like the Xiaomi Buds 5 Pro
The first phone to use this chip is expected to be the iQOO Z10 Turbo, launching in late April 2025. Other brands like Xiaomi, Oppo, and Meizu are also expected to release phones with the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 soon.
