Microsoft is taking a step into the world of artificial intelligence with its Copilot service in a way that could revolutionize the way we interact with our computers.
According to Intel Copilot can run locally on PCs, a change that could bring a number of significant improvements.
One of the most important innovations is that the next artificial intelligence PCs will require integrated neural processing units (NPU) with a performance of more than 40 TOPS (operations per second). This is beyond the capabilities of any consumer processor on the market today.
This additional power will make it possible On PCs, “more elements of Copilot” run locally, reducing the need to rely so heavily on cloud processing.
Currently, Copilot runs almost everything in the cloud, which introduces some lag. With local computing capabilities, this delay would be significantly reduced, potentially improving performance and privacy.
To date, Windows has made little use of the power of NPUs, but ChromeOS and macOS are already leveraging the technology for various video and audio processing, OCR, translation, and live transcription functions.
Intel’s Lunar Lake chips, coming to market by 2025, are expected to triple the current speed of its NPUs. The company has also announced an AI PC development kit based on the ASUS NUC Pro, using its current Meteor Lake silicon.
