Some Uber drivers suspect they are sometimes used as drug “mules”

Some Uber Drivers Are Concerned That They Are Unknowingly Delivering Drugs UberConnect, company parcel service.

Some US and Australian drivers told NBC News that they feared customers would use them as “drug mules.”

A driver took a package to a police station after receiving an almost empty plastic bag. “All I could see inside was a small bag that had two crystallized shapes”said the driver to the medium. “I immediately assumed it was some kind of narcotic.”

The driver took the suspicious package to police but said he was nervous that the customer could track it on the Uber app. “I was worried because that person can see that I’ve strayed from the route, and if he knows the area – which isn’t too far from his house – he can see that I’m parked outside the police station”said.

Uber prohibits customers from using the service to deliver illegal items, alcohol, medicine or drugs, according to a company website. Although, packages must also be well sealed and drivers are prohibited from opening or looking inside packages.

An Uber spokesperson said: “When we receive these types of reports, our global security team investigates and may take action ranging from disabling the relevant account to reporting the matter to authorities.”

“The misuse of shipping and transportation platforms to deliver illicit drugs is an industry-wide issue, and we will continue to work with law enforcement to address it.”added the spokesperson.
