Siddaramaiah takes oath as Chief Minister - Samakal

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi were present at the swearing-in ceremony. Yadav, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief MK Stalin, former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and ‘People Democratic Party’ (PDP) chief Mehebuba Mufti, ‘Nationalist Congress Party’ (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar, National Conference (NC) chief Farooq Abdullah, actor Kamal Haasan and others.

However, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee did not participate in the swearing-in ceremony as previously announced. But he saved the invitation by sending an envoy. Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member Kakali Ghosh Dastidar attended the swearing-in ceremony instead of Mamata.

Congress defeated BJP by getting 135 out of 224 seats in the assembly elections on May 10. They also emerged as the single majority party. BJP came second with 66 seats and JD-S came third with 19 seats.

Even after a record victory in the Karnataka assembly elections, the cold fight between Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah over the Chief Minister’s chair has worried the Congress. Complications started over who would be the chief minister. On one side is former chief minister Siddaramaiah, on the other is state Congress president DK Sivakumar. Shivakumar kept putting pressure on the party high command to sit on the post of chief minister. As a result, the swearing-in day had to be postponed.
