Berlin wants European mobilization against Tehran. Germany, through the voice of the head of its diplomacy, is calling for sanctions from the European Union against Iran, where demonstrations sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini are being violently repressed. “Within the EU, I am doing everything possible to put in place sanctions against those in Iran who beat women to death and shoot protesters in the name of religion”wrote Thursday, September 29 Annalena Baerbock, the German Minister of Foreign Affairs, on Twitter.

Iran stepped up pressure on celebrities and journalists on Thursday following the wave of protests sparked in the country by the death of Mahsa Amini days after the young woman was arrested by vice squads. “The batons and tear gas are not the expression of power, it is pure fear that is expressed through this violence of the system” Iranian, says the German Foreign Minister.

Germany wants the dead to be ‘solved’

For Annalena Baerbock, “Those who rule through numbing violence fear nothing more than the women who raise their voices together. The Iranian authorities must immediately cease their brutal actions. Not only the death of Mahsa Amini, but also that of many protesters, must be elucidated”asks the German minister, who had summoned the Iranian ambassador to Germany on Monday.

The protest movement, the largest since 2019, was sparked by the September 16 death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, three days after her arrest by the vice squad. According to the Iranian news agency Fars, “about 60” people have been killed since the protests began, while the Oslo-based NGO Iran Human Rights has reported a death toll of at least 76.
