Samsung is rolling out the new, 3 GB “One UI 6.1” update to Galaxy smartphones and tablets. The update now brings the Galaxy AI experience to some older Samsung devices, as Samsung itself states. The current Galaxy S24 devices are already delivered with Galaxy AI. We have already tested these AI functions extensively.
After the update has been installed, a new button will be visible in some system apps. This new button, which is marked by three stars, can be found in the system apps such as the gallery, the keyboard, Samsung Notes, the audio recorder and even in Samsung’s own browser.
Samsung brings its own AI to devices
With this button you can call up the Galaxy AI. This is the AI developed by Samsung itself, which is intended to relieve you of work in the respective apps. For this purpose, Samsung has trained its own Large Language Model (LLM) and does not use existing models such as ChatGPT. It even has its own image generator on board.
Further: Galaxy AI – You need to know these 5 AI functions
AI can take over some tasks for you. In the gallery, the AI can independently remove and move objects from photos or remove annoying reflections or shadows. The functions look different in the browser. Here the AI can summarize or translate text from websites for you. Of course, the AI also supports you when writing and makes wording suggestions or, if desired, translates your messages into other languages.
In the video, SamMobile presents the new functions on an S23 Ultra:
You can then have voice messages that you have recorded on your device automatically translated into another language by the AI. You can also have phone calls translated by Galaxy AI in real time. 13 languages are currently supported.
The AI can also create your own background images for you. In this process, you select a few parameters and the image generator conjures up an individually created background for you.
To use Galaxy AI features, you need a free Samsung account. In the device settings you then have the option of deactivating selected functions or the AI completely. You also have the choice to only activate Galaxy AI functions that are exclusively on your own device.
These devices will receive the update
With the update, some selected models will receive AI. Currently including the Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Tab S9 series, the Galaxy AI. However, Samsung has not completely ruled out the possibility that other older flagships will also receive the AI, although whether and when is uncertain.
