Microsoft teams have just announced on September 24, 2021 the deployment of version 94.0.992.31 of Microsoft Edge on the stable channel. This new version of the future Windows 11 browser includes many new features, starting with new tools intended to strengthen the security offered to users when downloading files.

First, Microsoft Edge will now block mixed content downloads. In other words, pages secured with HTTPS will only download files from other pages secured with HTTPS. If they come from non-HTTPS pages, downloads will be automatically blocked.

Besides, this version will also limit private network requests to secure contexts. As the American company specifies, access to resources on local networks (intranet) from pages on the Internet requires that these pages be transmitted by HTTPS.

Microsoft Edge improves its security and accessibility

We also note the collection of all accessibility-related parameters in a single page. You can find the edge: // settings / accessibility page under the main settings list. Many options will be offered to you, such as the possibility of enlarging a web page, displaying a high visibility map around the focus area as well as “other settings that can help you improve your web browsing experience ”.

Microsoft also specifies that it will continue to add other parameters in this section in future versions of Microsoft Edge. Finally, and this is good news, the Redmond firm announces adoption of a 4-week release cycle for major versions. Note that companies can opt for an extended Stable Channel option instead, which allows a longer major update cycle of 8 weeks to stay instead of 4.

Companies that opt for the Extended Stable Channel option will still benefit from all the innovation and security of four-week cycles, but at a more manageable pace. Between major releases, customers choosing this option can expect a bi-weekly security update with the most significant fixes ”, assures Microsoft. As a reminder, Microsoft Edge 94 also puts inactive tabs to sleep to save CPU and RAM resources.
