Consumers aren’t looking for new tablets in 2022, says Canalys

The world market for tablets Y Chromebooks fell again for the fourth consecutive quarter according to the market analysis agency channels. That said, for more than a year now, the sales volume of this product segment has been gradually declining.

The drop in the tablet market was 11% compared to last year’s figures. Even so, more than 34.8 million Android and iOS tablets were sold worldwide, without mitigating the drop felt in the global market.

According to market analysis agency Canalys, interest in and demand for new tablets has been falling for four quarters. The latest data released by the company point to a repeated fall since the second quarter of 2021, that is, a year of consecutive falls.

The 11% drop compared to last year’s sales figures materialized in 34.8 million units sold worldwide. In particular, the drop in demand for Chromebooks was more pronounced, more specifically with a 57% reduction in sales volume in the second quarter of 2022, when 5.1 million units were sold.

Apple, Samsung, Amazon and Lenovo felt a market drop

Apple continues to lead the market in the first place. However, it lost market share, from 15% to 12.1% with its iPads globally. In second place is Samsung, which posted a further drop of 13%, still selling 7 million tablets in the same period.

In third place and with 3.5 million fewer tablets sold than last year, Lenovo maintains its position. It is followed by Amazon, which also managed to sell 3.3 million units of its Amazon Fire tablets and gain a 6% market share. Finally, in fifth place we have Huawei with a staggering 26% drop, selling 1.7 million tablets.

Among the factors cited by Canalys to justify this fall, we have global inflation and the slowdown in the Chinese economy as the main causes. At the same time, due to the drop in production in China, the distribution chain would also be affected with fewer units reaching the market. However, the demand was also gradually declining.
