In February 2024, the BKA wrote to a total of around 186,000 citizens aged 16 and over nationwide asking them to take part in the survey in the next few weeks. “If you have been contacted, you can make an important contribution to improving the security situation in Germany by taking part in the survey,” promises the BKA. The citizens contacted were randomly drawn from the population registers of cities and municipalities using a statistical procedure.
The questionnaire is available in paper form and online. It is available in German, Turkish, Russian and Arabic. The infas Institute for Applied Social Science GmbH from Bonn is conducting the survey on behalf of the BKA. Specifically, the questionnaire asks the following points:

- Reporting behavior, reasons for or against reporting to the police
- Feeling of security, also specific to a crime
- Evaluation of the police
- Characteristics and consequences of criminal experience
- Information on age, gender, education, religion, migration background, etc.

Do I have to take part in the study?
No, participation in the SKiD survey is voluntary. If you have been contacted but do not want to take part in the current SKiD 2024 survey, do not fill out the questionnaire. If you do not fill out the questionnaire, you will receive one or two reminder letters, as the BKA explains. You can also ignore these.
