Apple M1 Pro and M1 Max: The “Beastest” Chips Are Here

Apple last year announced its new self-developed M1 chip, which proved to be quite beast in performance and autonomy.

Today the company announced its successors, the chips M1 Pro and M1 Max, debuting with the new MacBook Pros and setting a new record for performance and energy efficiency.

The M1 Pro and M1 Max offer fast unified memory, industry-leading performance per watt and incredible power efficiency, plus increased memory capacity and bandwidth.

Apple M1 Pro

The M1 Pro features 33.7 billion transistors, more than double the M1. The new 10 core CPU, includes eight high-performance cores and two high-efficiency cores, and it’s up to one 70 percent faster than the M1, lor that translates to incredible CPU performance.

Compared to the latest 8-core laptop chip, M1 Pro delivers up to 1.7 times more CPU performance at the same power level and achieves maximum PC chip performance using up to 70 percent less power.

M1 Pro has a GPU of up to 16 coresIt’s up to 2x faster than the M1 and up to 7x faster than the graphics built into the latest 8-core notebook chip. Compared to a powerful discrete laptop GPU, M1 Pro offers more performance and uses up to 70% less energy.

Also, M1 Pro can be configured with up to 32GB of fast unified memory, with a memory bandwidth of up to 200 GB / s.

The M1 Pro and M1 Max include an Apple-designed multimedia engine that speeds up video processing while maximizing battery life.

M1 Pro also includes a Dedicated acceleration for ProRes professional video codec, allowing playback of high quality multiple ProRes video streams in 4K and 8K, using very little power.

Apple M1 Max

The M1 Max is the biggest chip Apple has ever built 57 billion transistors. has the same powerful 10 core CPU than the M1 Pro and adds a large 32-core GPU for graphics performance up to 4 times faster than the M1.

In addition, the GPU offers a Performance comparable to a high-end GPU in a compact business laptop, but consuming up to 40% less powerand next-gen GPU-like performance on larger laptops, but using up to 100 watts less power.

That means less heat is generated, fans run quieter and less often, and battery life is longer on the new MacBook Pro.

M1 Max also doubles memory interface compared to M1 Pro to get up to 400 GB / s, or nearly 6 times the M1 memory bandwidth. This allows you to configure M1 Max with up to 64GB of unified fast memory.

M1 Max offers video encoding up to twice as fast as M1 Pro and features two ProRes accelerators.

Other common features

Both M1 Pro and M1 Max have a 16-core neural engine to accelerate machine learning on the device and improve camera performance and a new display engine allows you to control multiple external monitors.

Additionally, additional onboard Thunderbolt 4 controllers provide more I/O bandwidth.

Apple’s custom image signal processor, along with the neural engine, uses computer video to improve image quality for sharper videos and more natural skin tones in the built-in camera.

Lastly, the new chips also include Apple’s Secure Enclave, hardware-verified secure boot, and runtime anti-exploit technologies.
