YouTube suppresses singer R. Kelly’s official channels

The video platform YouTube removed the official channels of the American singer R. Kelly, convicted of sexual crimes at the end of September.

"We can confirm that we have removed two channels linked to R. Kelly in accordance with our rules on creator liability."a YouTube spokesperson told AFP on Wednesday.

The R&B singer’s profile is still accessible on the YouTube Music audio streaming service, where the artist has 137,000 subscribers.

The platform, a Google subsidiary, says it allows content uploaded before the removal of R. Kelly’s two official channels. He also has no intention of deleting clips of the singer shared by other users.

Their albums and songs are also still available on other audio streaming platforms such as Apple Music, Spotify or Amazon Music. When contacted by AFP, these three companies did not immediately respond.

R. Kelly, 54, was convicted in a New York court of leading a "system" to sexually exploit young people, including minors.

The artist will know his sentence on May 4 of next year. He is currently in preventive detention.
