Yerry de los Santos knew something was wrong with the body. Because of him, she didn’t think his situation was that serious.
The Pirates placed him on the 60-day list with a strained throwing shoulder muscle Friday. With 54 days remaining in the regular season, De los Santos’ rookie season has come to an end.
The reliever complained of stiffness prior to his outing at Arizona on Thursday, in which he gave up four runs without retiring a batter. The Quisqueyan thought it was a minor injury, but an MRI revealed otherwise.
“You feel bad because the kid was having a good year,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. “But I think after looking at the footage, we decided it was the best thing for him.”
Before his departure in Arizona, De los Santos had a 3.51 ERA and a 3.67 FIP in 25.2 innings, with 26 strikeouts and eight walks.
