WHO Requests $8 Million to Combat Myanmar Earthquake Crisis

Global health leaders are scrambling to respond to a devastating earthquake in Myanmar. The World Health Organization (WHO) is seeking $8 million in emergency funds to tackle the disaster.

The quake has left over 1,700 people dead and thousands more at risk of injury and disease. The WHO has declared a “highest level of emergency” and needs financial support to provide urgent care, prevent outbreaks, and restore vital health services within 30 days.

As the death toll continues to rise, the Myanmar military has confirmed over 1,700 fatalities, with hundreds still missing. Alexander Matheou, Asia-Pacific director for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), warns that humanitarian needs are escalating by the hour. He emphasizes that this crisis is not just a natural disaster, but a complex humanitarian emergency layered on top of existing issues in Myanmar.

The situation on the ground remains dire, with the military continuing air strikes against opposition groups despite the earthquake crisis. The BBC reports that the ongoing violence is exacerbating the humanitarian crisis, leaving many without access to basic necessities like food, shelter, and medical care.

Key Challenges Ahead

The WHO and other aid organizations face significant challenges in responding to the disaster. These include:

  • Providing emergency medical care to those injured in the quake
  • Preventing the spread of diseases like cholera and typhoid fever
  • Restoring vital health services, including hospitals and clinics
  • Delivering food, shelter, and other essential supplies to affected communities

The international community is urged to provide support to help alleviate the suffering of those affected by the earthquake. Every hour counts in this emergency response.
