Luke Voit hit a two-run homer and drove in three more with a double as the San Diego Padres overturned a five-run deficit to beat the Chicago Cubs 12-5 on Tuesday night.
The Padres trailed 5-0 when starter Kyle Hendricks was pulled by the Cubs after allowing Jake Cronenworth’s double leading off the sixth.
Voit homered off reliever Chris Martin to ignite a four-run attack in the sixth inning. His double off Mychal Givens gave the Padres the lead for good and was the key to a six-run seventh inning drive.
Willson Contreras hit two home runs, drove in three runs and scored three. However, the Cubs suffered their eighth straight loss.
Kyle Tyler (1-0) won two shutout innings in relief. The loss went to Scott Effross (1-2).
For the Padres, the Dominicans Manny Machado 5-0 with a run scored, Sergio Alcántara 1-0, Nomar Mazara 5-2 with a run scored and three RBIs. Colombian Jorge Alfaro 4-2 with two runs scored and one produced. Venezuelan José Azocar 4-2 with one run scored and two produced.
For the Cubs, Dominicans Christopher Morel 3-0 with a run scored, Jonathan Villar 4-0. The Venezuelan Contreras 4-3 with three runs scored and three produced.
