Liverpool took down Everton 1-0 in the Merseyside derby, holding a 12-point lead in the Premier League. But the real buzz is about a tense moment between a current Liverpool star and a Reds legend.
After the match, Michael Owen said even if Liverpool wins the Premier League, the season might end on a sour note due to recent losses in the League Cup and UEFA Champions League. “Liverpool was set for an amazing season,” Owen said. “Winning the Premier League will still be great, but it’ll be a bit bitter because they were building something special.”
Captain Virgil Van Dijk didn’t agree. He shot back at Owen, “So you’re saying the season won’t be special?” Van Dijk thinks winning the Premier League is a big deal and defended the title’s importance. “We need to change the narrative. We’re fighting for the biggest prize of the season. Eight games left, we know what’s at stake. We have to keep going, fight, and enjoy the ride.”
Owen stuck to his point, saying the season could’ve been “something very special.” Van Dijk insists the Premier League title is still a huge achievement. “As I said, it still looks very special to me. At the start of the season, nobody thought we’d fight on all four fronts. Now we’re in a phase where we’re still fighting for the most important title, and that’s reality. This season can still be very, very special.”
Despite Van Dijk’s response, Owen maintained that winning the English championship would be great, but they missed a chance for something “incredibly special.” “I stand by what I said. If I’d said at the start of the season that Liverpool would win the Premier League, this would be a very good season. As Virgil said, not many people gave them a chance, especially after changing managers. But it was becoming something incredibly special.”
