Usyk Drops One of Four Belts, No Longer HW Champion

Usyk is no longer the absolute heavyweight champion: he loses one of his four belts

Yes, it took them 25 years to find an undisputed heavyweight champion. Since Lennox Lewis achieved this feat in 1999, there had not been a boxer holding the belts of the four main boxing organizations. That was until Oleksandr Usyk took the title by beating Tyson Fury by split decision in May.

However, after just 38 days, the waiting is over, and once again, there is no undisputed champion. Usyk has vacated the International Boxing Federation (IBF) title, declining to defend it against the mandatory challenger, Daniel Dubois, instead opting for a rematch with Fury.

Usyk’s decision sets the stage for a potential fight between British boxers Daniel Dubois and Anthony Joshua, scheduled for September 21 at Wembley. The Ukrainian boxer himself announced the news on social media, saying “Anthony and Daniel, listen, I know the IBF title is important to you. My gift to you, on September 21.”

Usyk will face Fury once again on December 21 in Riyadh, but this time, only three belts will be on the line – the World Boxing Council, World Boxing Association, and World Boxing Organization.
