Uruguay Police Director Condemns Bomb Threats to Schools and Malls

The National Police director, José Azambuya, made it clear that the Ministry of Interior won’t tolerate public peace disruptions, including bomb threats. He vowed to go after those responsible.

These cases are now in court, Azambuya noted, and once the culprits are identified, they’ll face judicial penalties.

Investigation underway

The police are concerned and focused on investigating, Azambuya said during a press conference. This came after the University of the Republic received a threat via email on Wednesday, along with similar threats at a high school and shopping centers.

These investigations take time, Azambuya explained. We have to respect certain guarantees. Such actions have consequences – they’re irresponsible. He also stated, “This can’t happen. We’ll work closely with the Prosecutor’s Office to prevent these situations.”

Azambuya urged those in charge of threatened locations not to evacuate on their own. That decision should be made by the Police and Fire Department.

“The police are on high alert,” he added.

This press conference, which didn’t allow questions from journalists, happened hours after the University of the Republic had to suspend its morning activities due to a massacre threat.
