The works of Leonora Carrington return, but now in the form of a tarot

Leonora Carrington, an English-born painter, sculptor and writer, developed a connection to Mexico, where she not only lived most of her adult life but also left an enduring and ever-changing artistic legacy.

On March 27, the SoHo House in Mexico City opened its doors to commemorate Women’s Month in collaboration with the Leonora Carrington Council and presented the tarot designed by the artist, accompanied by her exhibition “Women Consciousness.”

This collection, consisting of works referencing the feminist movement founded in 1972, was chosen to complement the presentation of the Tarot.

Carrington has always been connected to the magical and esoteric world. For her, reading tarot was not just a hobby, but a way to explore the subconscious and gain access to worlds as fantastic as her works.

Who was Leonora Carrington?

Let us remember that Leonora was an essential figure in Mexico, joining the group of Surrealist artists that included figures such as Remedios Varo and Octavio Paz. This period was fundamental to his artistic development, finding in Mexican surrealism a platform to express his imagination and ideas.

Over time, Carrington discovered a connection between her art and her passion for tarot and developed skills at predicting events among her friends. However, these skills often caused problems and he had to put them aside.

The presentation of these 22 Major Arcana is an invitation to explore spirituality, introspection and art.

This project, carried out thanks to the collaboration between Pablo Weis Carrington, his son, and Fermín Llamazares, president of the Leonora Carrington Council, aims to preserve and disseminate the legacy of one of Mexico’s most famous artists.

The Leonora Carrington Council team was dedicated to curating this unique version of the Tarot, reinterpreting the colors and details of the deck. This version emphasizes femininity and the power of creation in each card, which is usually presented from a male perspective in other decks.

This release offers a journey of discovery into a surreal world. Each deck in this special edition comes with a text created by Micaela Mendoza to guide its use, as well as a cloth inspired by the four elements of nature.
