The European Union will impose sanctions on Iran’s drone and missile sectors

The leaders of the countries of the The EU agreed on Wednesday evening to impose sanctions on Iranian drone and missile manufacturersannounced the President of the European Council, Charles Michel.

We have decided to impose sanctions on Iran. “It is a clear message that we want to send,” Michel said during a brief press contact at the end of the opening day of an EU summit in Brussels.

The idea, the senior Belgian official added, “is to hit the companies necessary for drones and missiles.”

The draft conclusions, which were negotiated for several days, state: The EU “was ready” to impose these sanctionsbut obviously the position has evolved throughout the day.

In the conclusions of the opening day of the summit, the leaders noted that the EU “will take restrictive measures against Iran, in particular with regard to unmanned aerial vehicles and missiles.”

Also the summit “strongly and unequivocally” condemned Iran’s attack on Israel with drones and missiles and reiterated the bloc’s commitment “to Israel’s security and regional stability.”

The leaders of EU countries added that they were ready to “work with all our partners to prevent an escalation of tensions in the region, especially in Lebanon.”
