The Dallas Mavericks are close to signing Kemba Walker

Los Mavericks de Dallas están cerca de contratar a Kemba Walker

The Dallas Mavericks are close to a deal with four-time All-Star point guard Kemba Walker, a person familiar with the talks said Monday.

Walker’s career has been on hiatus due to knee problems. However, the arrival of the seasoned 32-year-old could give star Luka Doncic some of the help he needs on the struggling Mavericks.

The source who reported on the impending deal spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, as the deal has not been finalized and is still dependent on medical tests.

The Substack platform was the first outlet to report on the deal, in a note signed by Marc Stein, a reporter who has covered the NBA for a long time.

Dallas is riding a season-worst four-game losing streak and has dipped below the .500 mark after reaching the Finals last season.

The Mavs lost Jalen Brunson to the New York Knicks as a free agent after excelling alongside Doncic.

Brunson played a role in helping Dallas win playoff games without its star.

The loss of Brunson also deprived Dallas of one of its two best ball handlers, after Doncic. Spencer Dinwiddie has had to soak up a lot of the work this season.

Doncic’s side shooters have struggled as well. Dorian Finney-Smith, Reggie Bullock and Tim Hardaway have been through unproductive streaks.

Walker played only 37 games last season, his only with the New York Knicks, because of knee problems that have plagued him for years.

Taken ninth overall in the 2011 draft, Walker excelled in the last three of his eight seasons with Charlotte before signing as a free agent with Boston.

Walker played a good part of the 2019-20 season, disrupted by the pandemic. It was the last of five seasons in which he averaged at least 20 points per game.

He played just 43 games in his second season with the Celtics, who traded him to the Knicks during the offseason.
