Sri Lanka beat the West Indies in the first round and secured first place in the WTC points table

In the first round at the Galle International Stadium, host Sri Lanka defeated the West Indies by 187 runs. With this, the Sri Lankan team took a 1-0 lead in the two-match test series.

After taking a 156-run lead in the first inning, Sri Lanka declared the second inning for 191 runs and set a 348-run goal against the West Indies. In response, the Caribbean team was only able to score 160 runs. Dimuth Karunaratne, who scored a century in the first inning for Sri Lanka, received the Man of the Match award.

In the second inning, the West Indian batsmen looked helpless against the Sri Lankan bowlers. Nkrumah Bonner scored 68 undefeated and Joshua Da Silva scored 54 runs for the West Indies. At the same time, eight players couldn’t even touch the tens figure.

Karunaratne, who scored 147 in the first inning for Sri Lanka, scored 83 runs in the second inning. Aside from this, veteran player Angelo Mathews scored an undefeated 69 in the second inning. Ramesh Mendis took the maximum of seven wickets for Sri Lanka in bowling. While Lasith Imbuldeniya got six and Jayavikrama got five windows.

This is Sri Lanka’s first victory at the 2021-23 ICC World Test Championship (WTC). This was Sri Lanka’s first WTC match and now they have overtaken India to reach the top position in the points table based on 100 percent points.
