According to a newspaper called Colombo Page, police tried to stop the protesters in the Presidency and at the outer gate of the finance ministry. Police say the 21 people detained included women.

Officials say the operation is aimed at clearing the area of ​​protesters ahead of a visit by the International Monetary Fund delegation to the finance ministry.
