Russian soldier arrested in Ukraine could face life in prison for war crimes

According to the news agency, a Russian soldier who was tried in Ukraine for war crimes during the Russian invasion has pleaded guilty during the trial, which could lead to possible life imprisonment in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.

When 21-year-old Sergeant Vadim Sheshmein was read out in court as guilty of war crimes and premeditated murder, he replied in the affirmative.

The soldier is accused of killing a 62-year-old man in northeastern Ukraine in the wake of the Russian attack. During the hearing, the prosecutor read out the charges against the accused and a translator translated them into Russian.

Prosecutors say Shishimarin was commanding a unit in the Tank Division when his convoy was attacked. He and four other soldiers stole a car and encountered a 62 while traveling near Chopakhiyoka. It happened to a man who was on a bicycle.

According to the prosecution, Shishimarin was ordered to kill the civilian and used a Kalashnikov assault rifle to do so.
