Puerto Rico Officials Arrested for Federal Crimes

Seven people, including officials from the Puerto Rico Ports Authority, were arrested Monday for allegedly commit various crimesWhat organized crimeFederal sources on the island confirmed to Efe.

Among the crimes that detainees face are violating the RICO Act (Organized Crime Law), commit health care fraud, money laundering and extortion, The FBI spokeswoman in Puerto Rico, Lymari Cruz, explained to Efe.

"All seven were arrested today at their respective residences. The operation was quite fast and not all the defendants face the same charges"Cruz said.

Some of those arrested are members of the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA).

Cruz assured that the operation "it’s a bit complex" and that FBI agents worked with other federal agencies on the island, the United States Postal Inspection Service, the local Port Authority, the Puerto Rico Police and municipal officials from San Juan and Carolina.

Federal and local authorities will offer a press conference at 11:00 local time (15:00 GMT) this Monday at the San Juan Federal Prosecutor’s Office to give more details about the arrests. EFE
