The warden of a prison in the coastal western province of Manabí Ecuadorwas shot dead this Sunday when a referendum was held to step up the fight against organized crime, the Prison Service (SNAI) reported.
Damián Parrales, director of the Manabí Deprivation of Liberty Center Number 4, known as El Rodero, “was the victim of an attack that unfortunately took his life,” the organization said in a statement. In Ecuador, prisons are centers of drug trafficking and there have been bloody massacres among prisoners that have killed more than 460 people since 2021.
