One in seven German companies see their existence in danger from the pandemic

One in seven German companies, 14%, see their existence in danger due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a survey carried out in December and released today by the German economic institute Ifo.

The percentage does not change compared to the previous survey, carried out in June of last year, but falls compared to February 2021 (18.7%) and November and June 2020 (17.6% and 21.8%, respectively).

"Tour operators and travel agencies still feel particularly threatened, with 73.2%, as well as companies in the events sector, with 67.4%"said Klaus Wohlrabe, Ifo’s head of polls.

In the retail sector, 17.1% of businesses said they were in an extreme situation, compared to 14.4% in June, which Wohlrabe attributed to "the consequences of consumer containment".

In February of last year, 34.5% of retailers were afraid for their business.

In the hotel and restaurant industry, the situation continues to be critical, with more than half of the businesses that see their existence threatened.

In restaurants and other places where food is served, this is the concern of 52.5% of businesses, compared to 55.4 in June, while in those that offer accommodation it rises to 58.8%, compared to 52.1% in June.

In the manufacturing industry, only 5.7% of companies see their existence threatened, compared to 16.8% in June 2020: the most affected sector, as in June, is textiles -21.3%, after 32.6%. % in June, and that of graphic arts and reproduction of recorded media (21.3%).
