NATO chief condemns "irresponsible" destruction of a satellite in orbit

The Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Jens Stoltenberg, condemned the act on Tuesday "irresponsible" destruction of a satellite in orbit by Russia as part of the tests of a new weapons system

Stoltenberg said in Brussels that the test "has created a large amount of debris, which is now a risk for the International Space Station and also for the Chinese space station". "This was an irresponsible act of Russia"added.

The destruction of the satellite, he pointed out, generated abundant "garbage that represents a risk to civil activity in space".

The official noted that an important part of NATO’s capabilities depends on its satellite tools, including "communications, navigation and early warnings", but assured that the military alliance does not intend "militarize space".

Stoltenberg also pointed out that the situation "is cause for concern because it shows that Russia is developing new weapons systems that can shoot down satellites".

In this way, he added, that country "can destroy space capabilities important to basic infrastructure on earth".

The Russian Defense Ministry announced that it had "successfully a test" launch of a missile that destroyed the "space apparatus" Teslina-D.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov crossed out "hypocrites" the criticisms made by the United States of that missile test.

"To declare that the Russian Federation created risks for civilian exploitation of space is hypocritical to say the least. There is no fact in this regard", he expressed.
