More than 153,300 tourists entered the DR in the second week of January 2023

Dominican tourism continues to show strengths in his behavior. According to the official statistics of the Ministry of Tourism on January 8, 2023, 185,485 passengers entered the country by air and of these 153,391 were foreign visitors.

Passenger arrivals increased by 19.4% more in the week that began on January 8, going from 155,392 to 185,485 on the same date in 2022 and 2023, while with respect to tourist arrivals (non-resident visitors) the increase was 23.8%, going from 123,941 to 153,391 non-resident foreign visitorsaccording to the weekly report of the Tourism Intelligence System (Situr) of the Ministry of Tourism.

In terms of origin, the US market continues to dominate. From the United States, 70,544 tourists arrived in the countrya figure that represents a participation of 46.6% of arrivals in the second week of January that began on the 8th and a growth of 36.5% more than the previous year.

     Canada was the second largest emitterwith a participation of 20.5% in arrivals and a growth of 203.5% with respect to the same date of the previous year.

The arrival of tourists from the United States and Canada is followed by tourists from Panama, Colombia, other countries and Spain.

The airports with the most registered visits are Punta Cana, with 60.6%; AILA with 20.4%, Puerto Plata, with 6.5%, La Romana with 1.7%, El Catey, Samaná with 1.1% and La Isabela with 0.4%.

Accommodations

Tourists who visited the country in the second week of January of this current year chose hotels as their first resting point. The Situr/Mitur indicates that 68.9% of foreign visitors stayed in hotels23.5% chose private accommodation and 7.7% did so through the Airbnb platform.

In the said period, the country received 1,361 flights from 98 airlines, with an occupancy rate of 76%. The highest occupancy recorded on those flights was in Punta Cana (86%), followed by the Cibao airport with 98%, Gregorio Luperón 78%, AILA with 63%.

Tourism contributes 24% to growth in 2022

The activity with the greatest contribution to the result of the gross domestic product (GDP) in the year 2022 was hotels, bars and restaurantsby registering an interannual expansion of 24.0% in its real added value, according to the preliminary report on the behavior of the economy during the past year.

The information is contained in the report of the Central Bank (BCRD), an entity that attributes the behavior of this sector to the total arrival of 7.2 million tourists by airreaching a historical record.
