Mickey 17 Tops US Box Office with $19.1 Million Debut Weekend

The weekend of March 7-9, 2025, was marked by the release of “Mickey 17”, a new sci-fi film by director Bong Joon-ho. It topped the US box office, generating $19.1 million on its opening weekend. The film, starring Robert Pattinson, was shown on 3,807 screens. Notably, nearly half of its earnings came from premium formats, including 16% from IMAX alone.

“Mickey 17” also saw international success, earning an additional $24.5 million and topping the box office in 25 of the 66 territories where it was released. South Korea, the director’s home country, particularly welcomed the film, with $14.6 million in earnings.

In second place, “Captain America: Brave New World” earned $8.5 million in its fourth weekend, bringing its domestic total to $176.58 million. Despite a 43% drop from the previous weekend, the film remains the biggest success of 2025 so far, nearing $400 million in international earnings.

The animated film “Dog Man” from DreamWorks Animation, based on the graphic novel series by Dav Pilkey, continued to perform well. Despite a 62% drop in its second week, it reached a domestic total of $54.1 million, exceeding its production budget of $40 million.

Other new releases included “Rule Breakers” from Angel Studios, which debuted with $1.59 million on 2,044 screens, and “In the Lost Lands” by Paul W. S. Anderson, starring Dave Bautista and Milla Jovovich, which earned around $1 million on 1,370 screens.

Overall, the weekend was dominated by the strong performance of “Mickey 17”, confirming the public’s appetite for original sci-fi works and Bong Joon-ho’s directing.
