According to the police, tension broke out in the New Chekon area of the capital Imphal when some members of the Meiti and Kuki communities clashed over market space. The two sides initially clashed. For almost a month now, clashes between ethnic minorities have been going on in the state of Manipur due to various reasons. For a long time, there has been a conflict between the Kuki and Naga-led groups with the Meiti community, who inhabit the plains of Manipur. The Meitei community has long demanded the listing of Scheduled Tribes. Recently, the High Court directed the state government to look into whether the Meiti community can be included in the list of Scheduled Tribes. After this, this northeastern state became hot again.
All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) called for ‘Adivasi Saghati Padayatra’ on May 3 in Torbang in Churachandpur district in protest against the High Court order. From there the violence started. More than 70 people lost their lives in the week-long violence. Property worth crores of rupees was damaged. Millions of people were forced to leave their homes and take shelter in government shelters.

According to sources, a meeting has been held at the Nagaland House in Kolkata to bring peace to Manipur in this situation that has been going on for a month. The meeting was moderated by Naga separatist armed group NSCN-IM leader Ungmatem Vashum and representatives of Yuudhan Meiti and Kuki groups sat in the meeting. The meeting took place at the end of last week at Nagaland House in Salt Lake.
One of the grievances of the Maitai community in Manipur is that illegal Christian immigrants from Nagaland are taking refuge in Manipur and the population is changing. The Nagas also got involved with the Meitis and the Kukis in the recent violence in Manipur.
