Bangladesh: A boat carrying Hindu devotees to the Bodeshwari temple capsized in the Korota river in northwestern Bangladesh on Sunday. At least 24 people on board were killed in this accident, while more than a dozen are missing. Officials gave this information. The incident took place in Bangladesh’s Panchagarh district when the devotees were going to Bodeshwari temple in a boat on the occasion of Mahalaya (the beginning of Durga Puja festival), he said. According to the information, 70 to 80 passengers are estimated to be on the boat, which is more than the capacity of the boat.

Children included among the dead

Soleiman Ali, administrative head of Boda sub-district of Panchgarh, told reporters, “Around 24 people have died in the boat capsizing incident. Eight minor children and 12 women were among the dead, some of them were declared brought dead after being brought to a local hospital. He said firefighters and local divers were searching for the missing people. He said that 70 to 80 passengers are estimated to be on board the boat.

Thousands of Hindus go every year for Darshan

Administrative head Soleman Ali said the engine-powered boat was carrying devotees to the centuries-old Bodeshwari temple on the occasion of Durga Puja festival. Panchgarh deputy commissioner or administrative head Zahurul Haque said the boat was carrying more passengers than its capacity. Thousands of Hindus in Muslim-majority Bangladesh visit the Bodeshwari temple every year during the Durga Puja that began in Bangladesh on Sunday.

Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina condoled Sunday’s incident. Meanwhile, the local authorities were asked to take immediate steps for the treatment of the living and compensation for the dead.
