The police launched a search operation in various districts of Punjab in search of Amritpal, the leader of ‘Warish Punjab De’ organization. Allegedly, on March 18, Amritpal and his close associate Poppalpreet Singh attacked the lockup of Anjala police station near Amritsar with hundreds of people to free their imprisoned comrades. Both were absconding since the incident. However, on April 10, Poppalpreet was arrested by the police. Amritpal was elusive. This time he was also arrested.

According to a report in Anandabazar newspaper, Amritpal was arrested under the National Security Act. Several sources claimed that the combined efforts of the Punjab Police and the Central Intelligence Agency made it possible to arrest him.

Amritpal faces serious charges of racial discrimination, attempted murder, assault on police and obstruction of police work.

Some sources are claiming that Amritpal himself approached the police in front of a Gurdwara in Moga city early on Sunday morning. Then he was arrested and taken to Amritsar. But this information has not yet been confirmed by the police.

Just three days ago, police arrested Amritpal’s wife Kirandeep from Amritsar airport. He was going to London. He has been detained for questioning. A Khalistani leader was also caught among them.
