In a shocking turn of events, New Zealand’s Kane Williamson has announced his decision to step down as captain of the limited-overs team, effective immediately. This move comes after the team’s disappointing performance in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, where they failed to qualify for the Super 8 stage.
Leaves captaincy and central contract
In a statement, Williamson revealed that he has also opted out of the Players Central Contract with the New Zealand Cricket Board, allowing him to pursue opportunities in foreign franchise leagues and Test cricket. The 33-year-old cricketer cited personal reasons, stating that his life outside cricket has changed significantly, and he now wants to spend more time with his family.
Already relinquished Test captaincy
This marks the second time Williamson has relinquished a captaincy, having previously stepped down as Test captain. During his tenure as limited-overs captain, Williamson led the team in 91 ODIs and 75 T20 matches, with the team securing 47 ODI wins and 39 T20 wins.
