INS VIKRANT: US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Wednesday congratulated his Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh on the commissioning of aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. Austin noted India’s important role as a security provider in the strategically important Indo-Pacific region with the induction of INS Vikrant. The Pentagon said Austin and Singh held a telephone conversation and committed to expanding information-sharing and logistics cooperation between the two armies. At the same time, the two leaders agreed to initiate a dialogue to deepen bilateral cooperation in space, cyber, artificial intelligence and other new defense areas.

Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Brigadier General Pat Ryder told about the talks that these talks between the leaders of the two countries took place at a time when the India-US ‘two plus two’ inter-sessional meeting and maritime in New Delhi last week. Security talks took place. The two leaders discussed recent developments in certain geographies, including East Asia, the Indian Ocean region and beyond. He noted the importance of the move to induct INS Vikrant into service for India’s role as a security provider in the Indo-Pacific. Austin’s remarks assume significance amid China’s aggressive moves in the strategically important Indo-Pacific region, where it has territorial disputes with several countries. In such a situation, India’s role in this area becomes important for all countries including America. On September 2, India commissioned its first indigenously built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant into service. With the warship in service, India has become one of the few countries that have the domestic capability to develop such ships.

“In light of the evolving regional security environment, the defense ministers of both countries committed to expanding information-sharing and logistics cooperation by working together and coordinating US and Indian militaries,” Ryder said. Austin also expressed his support for additional mid-voyage repairs of US Navy ships in India following the historic visit of USNS Charles Drew to Chennai in August.

agreed to cooperate on many issues

“The two leaders agreed to launch a dialogue later this year to deepen bilateral cooperation in space, cyber, artificial intelligence and other new defense areas,” Ryder said. Ministers Austin and Singh highlighted their commitment to strengthen defense technology and industrial cooperation to support India’s rise as a leading country and regional security provider in terms of industry. The two leaders also underscored the importance of advancing cooperation through the Quad Partnership to maintain regional peace, stability and prosperity, including coordinated humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.

According to Ryder, the two leaders committed to the ambitious initiative ahead of the 2+2 ministerial meeting in India early next year at a time when the US and India are working to deepen their cooperation. “The two leaders concluded the telephone conversation by reaffirming the importance of the US-India defense partnership to their shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific region,” he said. After the phone call, Defense Minister Singh tweeted, “Concerned from India’s side at the recent US decision to provide a package for Pakistan’s F-16 fleet.”

Defense and security cooperation discussed

Rajnath Singh said, “Had a good and fruitful telephonic conversation with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. We discussed the growing synergy of strategic interests and expanded defense and security cooperation. “We also discussed ways to enhance technical and industrial partnership and the possibility of cooperation in critical technologies,” he said. Singh said he looked forward to continuing talks with US Defense Secretary Austin to further strengthen the India-US partnership.
