“Evacuating” on the beaches of this Spanish city could cost more than RD$40,000

750 euros. With this amount, which in Dominican pesos would be around RD$42,800, is that the city council of the city of Vigo, Pontevedra province, intends to fine those who perform their “physiological needs” on one of its beaches.

This was revealed by an ordinance approved in 2021but that recently went viral due to the number of prohibitions it contains, as well as the fines imposed by this Galician town for these offenses.

The aforementioned rule is mentioned on a couple of occasions within the aforementioned document, the first time being in article 12, which contains the “hygienic-sanitary” norms.

In this section it is stated that “physiological evacuation at sea or on the beach” will not be allowedalso indicating that the mayor’s office “will promote, when they are not permanent, the installation of accessible public toilets during the bathing season.”

Likewise, committing this offense is considered under this ordinance as a minor infraction, fined with the amount already specified.

It is also prohibited to bathe on the beach with soap, gel, shampoo or any other similar product, as well as to use the showers and toilets for any other use that is not correct.

Serious offenses

Serious infractions will be fined from 751 euros to 1,500, and includes some offenses such as recidivism in the commission of minor offenses in the same year; prevent inspections of this ordinance.

Deposit burned materials, debris, wood, dead animals and liquids in the containers; leaving paddle surf boards, windsurfing, kitesurfing, jet skis stranded outside the marked areas; leave bulky objects such as coolers, chairs, umbrellas on the beach; swim with the red flag raised.

Making “misuse” or damaging the showers, footbaths, toilets, containers on the beach; any conduct that supposes an environmental alteration that affects the physical integrity of third parties; throw in the sand or sea containers of any sharp element, as well as construction debris.

Use grills and light fires or any other source of heat in the arenas without authorization from the administration; use gas cylinders, any flammable liquid, flares and pyrotechnic material, except in emergencies.

Camping, tents, canvas structures or the like; angling outside permitted hours; practice with sliding boards next to the beach or similar, outside the areas set up for this purpose and inside the bathing area.

Very serious offenses

These are sanctioned from 1501 euros to 3,000 euros, and are to repeat serious offenses within a year; advertise without the express authorization of the competent body; the circulation of boats, surfboards, paddle surfing, kitesurfing, jet skis, water skiing or other unauthorized floating devices at a distance of less than 200 meters from the coast and in bathing areas, except in duly marked channels.

Pour materials that can cause contamination and accidents; hold public events or sports competitions on the beaches without the authorization of the competent body; the circulation and parking of vehicles on the beach without authorization.

Seriously and significantly impede the operation of the public service sandbanks, in particular the cleaning of sandbanks and surveillance, rescue, first aid and first aid.

Prevent the use of a public service by another person or persons with the right to use it, as well as the free access of the public to municipal facilities such as showers, footbaths, toilets, etc.
