Eight dead when two boats with migrants collide in California

Police in San Diego have confirmed the deaths of eight people after two boats with migrants collided near Black’s Beach on Saturday.

The San Diego Marine Rescue Service has already deployed resources in the area. The San Diego Fire Department and US Customs and Border Patrol have also been mobilized, Fox News reports. The bodies have been transferred to the Coroner’s Office for identification.

A fire spokesman has explained that there is a dense fog that made rescue work difficult last night and has indicated that it is unknown how many of the people who were in the boats have been able to reach the coast.

"We have not been able to use helicopters. We had boats in the water (…). As soon as the conditions are met we will have the Coast Guard out and the Fire and Rescue Service working in search of possible victims."has indicated a person in charge of the Fire Department, Daniel Eddy, on OnScene TV.

The newspaper ‘The San Diego Union-Tribune’ first reported the incident, which would have occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday. A woman called 911 to report that she had arrived by sea from Mexico and that one of the boats had capsized.

Eight or 10 of the migrants were able to make it ashore, he said, but at least eight other people would still be in the water.

Black’s Beach is one of the largest nude beaches in the United States and is popular with surfers.
