Demonstration in Argentina for the 15,000 layoffs announced by the government

Hundreds of Argentine public administration workers demonstrated in front of government headquarters after thousands of layoffs were announced. The government ordered a heavy security deployment in ministries to control the protests.

Faced with the wave of layoffs, which includes around 15,000 civil servants hired by the central administration, workers gathered in front of their workplaces for a meeting.

According to union members, most of the layoffs were announced during Holy Week, which was supplemented by two holidays, Monday and Tuesday.

They were unable to enter their workplaces because a heavy security deployment was put in place, with hundreds of police officers deployed. There were clashes between police and demonstrators.

The Argentine government reported that the decision not to renew around 15,000 contracts was due to the aim of reducing government spending.

Last week, Argentine President Javier Milei announced that he would cut the number of public sector employees in the country by 70,000 jobs.

Public service officials are preparing a mobilization for this Friday.
