Death toll in Cyclone ‘Moka’ rises to 81 in Myanmar

The death toll in Myanmar has risen to 81 due to the impact of super cyclone ‘Moka’.

The cyclone formed in the Bay of Bengal hit Myanmar last Sunday. The wind speed was more than 195 km per hour. News – Irrawaddy.

Local leaders told AFP reporters at the scene that at least 46 people had died in villages in Rakhine state, home to the persecuted Rohingya Muslim minority.

Myanmar’s state broadcaster MRTV said 13 people were killed when a monastery collapsed in a village in Rathedaung Township, north of Rakhine’s capital Sittwe. A woman was killed when a building collapsed in a neighboring village.

Carlo, chief of Bu Ma village near Sittwe, said the death toll could rise. Because hundreds of people are still missing.

Earlier, a Rohingya camp leader, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of the junta, told AFP that 24 people had been killed in Khaung Doke Kar village, northwest of Sittwe. Several others are feared missing from low-lying areas, Rohingya villages and IDP camps.

AFP video footage showed wrecked wooden fishing boats piled up near the shore. Junta-controlled media reported that hundreds of base stations that keep mobile networks running in Rakhine have become inoperable.
