CryptoPunk Owner Turns Down $10 Million Offer For Ethereum NFT, But Why?

Another curious story from the new world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). An owner of a so-called CryptoPunk, an NFT of a pixel image on Ethereum (ETH), has turned down an offer of no less than 2,500 ETH, worth almost $10 million.

It is about CryptoPunk #6046, one of ten thousand unique pixel avatars. This CryptoPunk with 3D glasses on is “owned” by a certain Richerd, co-founder of Manifoldxyz:

Richerd reports that in a conversation he said the following: “My punk is not for sale. I don’t care what anyone offers me.” He then posted that as a message on Twitter and a few hours later, the offer of 2,500 ETH on CryptoPunk #6046 appeared.

The owner then declined the offer of a certain “poap.eth”. He himself admits that CryptoPunk #6046 is probably not worth 2,500 ETH, because it is only a “mid tier punk,” according to Richerd. He then goes on to claim that the reason someone is bidding so much on this NFT is because he the owner. He says that he has built a reputation with the CryptoPunk over the past six months and that his branding therefore supposedly worth so much.

Surprisingly, if sales had gone through, it wouldn’t even be the most expensive CryptoPunk ever. In June, CryptoPunk #7523 was sold for $11.7 million through Sotheby’s, the largest auction house in the world. Currently, even the cheapest CryptoPunks cost several hundred thousand. Visa also bought a CryptoPunk in August for 50 ETH. The most expensive NFT ever sold for a whopping $69.3 million, it concerns the digital artwork of ‘Beeple.’

Recently, several major platforms, including Coinbase, FTX and Sotheby’s, have announced NFT marketplaces. However, gaming platform Steam announced last weekend that it is banning NFT games.
