Chelsea and Manchester City are interested in signing the “new Luis Suárez”.

According to HITC, Chelsea and Manchester City are eyeing the emerging talent of Uruguayan striker Luciano Rodríguez. At just 20 years old, Rodríguez has caught the attention of the English giants in his native Uruguay thanks to his impressive progress with Liverpool Montevideo.

Rodríguez’s emergence on the international stage began to shine last year when he became Uruguay’s hero at the U-20 World Cup, scoring the winning goal in the final against Italy. His performance was also notable in his country’s U23 team, where he demonstrated his goalscoring abilities with six goals in six games.

Luciano Rodríguez, in the sights of the big boys

At club level, his time at Liverpool Montevideo since his arrival in 2023 has been impressive, with 11 goals in 38 games and several individual awards, including the Uruguayan League Young Player of the Year award. This performance attracted interest from European teams and although MLS’s Feyenoord and Charlotte FC tried to sign him, they were unsuccessful.

Now Manchester City and Chelsea have entered the race for Rodríguez. For Manchester City, signing the striker would be an additional option in attack, although the competition in the team could be intense with players like Erling Haaland and Julián Álvarez. On the other hand, Chelsea are looking for solutions to their finishing problems, but taking the chance on another young, inexperienced talent may not be the best option at the moment.

With his undoubted ability and potential, Luciano Rodríguez is being targeted by some of Europe’s biggest clubs, who could allow him to make the jump to one of the most competitive leagues in the world in the near future.
