Chavis’ solo homer tied the score at 7-7 after the Cubs had scored five times in the top of the eighth.
In the 10th, Chavis fielded Jason Heyward’s grounder for first base and got Patrick Wisdom out at the plate. The umpire’s decision was upheld after review.
In the bottom half, Chavis hit a short ball to right that fell off Scott Effross (1-3) and automatic runner Ke’Bryan Hayes scored after colliding with catcher Wilson Contreras. Hayes, who previously homered, lay motionless for a while before rejoining under his own power.
Pirates Colombian starter José Quintana allowed two runs on six hits with six strikeouts in six innings.
