Brest: a detainee found dead in his cell, his suspected fellow inmate

A detainee of the Brest remand center was found dead in his cell on Monday morning. He would have succumbed to the blows of one of his fellow inmates.

A fight would have broken out around 4 am in a cell where three inmates live together. Prison staff were called urgently by one of them, and found one of the men unconscious and lying on the ground. The guards then isolated the other two detainees – including the alleged assailant – and provided first aid to the injured person before help arrived. The firefighters unfortunately failed to resuscitate the victim, according to information from West France.

One of his fellow prisoners would have immediately identified himself as guilty of the assault upon the arrival of the guards. It would be “a violent, aggressive person suffering from serious psychiatric problems,” said a representative of the UFAP union to the regional daily.

The alleged assailant would also have self-harmed a few hours before the assault, and rounds were carried out every hour after his visit to the doctor on duty.

The 34-year-old man was serving time for theft, and was described as a calm inmate. The Brest public prosecutor confirmed the death of the detainee and an investigation was opened and entrusted to the Brest police station.
