Apple celebrates 20 years of Shazam with playlist and trivia

Apple is celebrating the 20th anniversary of 🎵 Shazam reviewing the history of the music recognition app and the “Most Shazamed” song of each year for the past two decades.

The iPhone Maker Acquired Shazam in 2017, Which Helped It Reach 1 billion song recognitions per month in 2021.

Shazam was originally launched in 2002 as a text messaging service that allowed users to get song names by dialing a number and holding their phones to the music.

Two decades later, the app is an important service for both music discovery and music recognition.

As of the week of August 15, Shazam has over 225 million monthly global users and officially surpassed 70 billion song recognitions.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Shazam, Apple created a apple music playlist with the song that has had the most requests for recognition each year since 2002. This includes since Sia’s Cheap Emotions up until “Astronaut in the Ocean” by Masked Wolf.

 

Apple also details some notable moments in the history of Shazam. The first song to be Shazamed was T. rex “Jeepster” in 2002. The first song recognized in the iOS app in 2008 was “How I Am Different” by Aimee Mann.

“TiK ToK” by Kesha was the first song to reach one million Shazams, while “Someone I knew” by Gotye feat. Kimbra was the first to reach 10 million song recognitions.

Lil Wayne he was the first artist to reach one million Shazams in 2009 and 10 million Shazams in 2011.
