Steps to make Ecobricks – An ecological building alternative. You take a PET bottle and fill it under pressure with clean, dry, non-recyclable and non-hazardous waste. Subsequently, these containers are used in the construction of houses, parks, sculptures and even leisure centers.

How to make eco bricks from filled PET bottles

Materials:

  • Clean, dry PET plastic bottles (any size)
  • Non-recyclable and non-hazardous inorganic waste (see list below)
  • Scissors or cutter
  • Funnel (optional)
  • Cane or staff (optional)
  • Permanent marker (optional)

Waste you can fill with:

  • plastic bags
  • Candy and snack packaging
  • Aluminum foil
  • Plastic caps
  • Straws
  • Toothbrushes
  • Empty medication containers (without labels)
  • Adhesive tapes
  • Balloons
  • sponges
  • Tetra Pak (properly washed and dried)
  • Synthetic fabrics
  • Any other plastic that cannot be recycled

Steps:

1. Prepare the bottle:

  • Wash the PET bottle thoroughly with soap and water and allow it to dry completely.
  • Remove the label and any remaining adhesive.
  • If the bottle has a wide spout or cap, you can carefully cut it open to make filling easier.

2. Fill bottle:

  • Start with large pieces of plastic and compact them well to make the most of the space.
  • To compact the material, you can use a stick or rod.
  • Do not fill the bottle to the brim, but leave a space of approx. 2 cm.

3. Close the bottle:

  • You can cover the bottle with the original cap or with a piece of fabric or plastic.
  • Make sure the bottle is tightly closed to prevent the material from leaking.

4. Label the Ecobrick (optional):

  • On the bottle you can write the date of manufacture, the type of waste contained and your name.

Tips:

  • Find a clean, dry place to store the Ecobricks.
  • You can stack them or place them on shelves.
  • If you have a sufficient number of ecostones, you can look for projects in your community to use them.
