Judge's ruling: Amitabh Bachchan's voice or image may not be used without permission

Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan’s voice, image or name may not be used without his permission. The Delhi High Court ruled today after receiving a petition from the 80-year-old actor.

The court also ordered the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and telecommunication service providers to remove certain content.

“The plaintiff is a well-known personality and is also depicted in several commercials,” Judge Navin Chawla said, noting that the actor has been “harmed” by those who use his trademark, without his consent, to promote their goods and services.

Amitabh Bachchan approached the court some time ago with a petition, intended for ‘everyone’, to protect their name, face, voice and other personality traits. His lawyer spoke in court.

“I’m giving you a taste of what’s going on. You make t-shirts and put your face on them. Someone else sells posters. Then there is also a registered domain name amitabhbachchan.com. That is why we are here today.”

The megastar has also filed for a ban against book publishers, T-shirt sellers, and various other businesses.
