Patient and consumer rights organizations in Europe have called on the European Union to take effective measures to tackle antibiotic shortages.

They say EU drug regulators need to do more to meet demand for widely used antibiotics in the region.

In a letter to the European Medicines Agency from 11 patient and consumer rights organizations, antibiotics include amoxicillin, which is used to treat bacterial infections and often ear and chest infections in children. prescribed for, the said medicine is not being provided since October 2022 last year.

The letter, signed by 11 organisations, including the European Public Health Alliance and the European Consumer Organisation, called on the European Medicines Agency to allow European pharmaceutical companies to increase production to meet the current shortage of antibiotics.

The European Medicines Agency and the European Commission have said that they are well aware of the contents of the letter. An EMA spokesman said further discussion on the issue would take place (tomorrow) on January 26.
