Yago Aguirre, Spanish junior champion, leaves for Germany

The champion of Spain Junior, Yago Aguirre will make the leap to professionalism with the continental German team, Saris Rouvy Sauerland Team. The team led by the German Jörg Scherf has signed the young Basque cyclist from the Iruki Donostialdea Bizikletan junior team. His leap into professionalism will continue to be combined with his mathematics studies at the University of Groningen.

Yago rose last July with the victory in the Spanish championship held in Valladolid, after a great race where he proved to be the strongest of the day with continuous attacks and being able to finish off the race in a sprint. In addition to the championship, Yago showed great consistency throughout 2022, reaping three more victories and numerous top 10 finishes. “The start of the year was very good and I felt very strong, but in April I had a slump, which forced me to stop. After a little rest I was little by little picking up a good race rhythm and I was able to maintain it all summer, where I was able to get fantastic results. At the start of the season I would not have imagined the results that I would end up achieving, so I am very happy with my last season as a junior”, says Yago Aguirre excited for everything that is to come with his new team.

One of the basic and fundamental pillars for Yago Aguirre, when it comes to achieving success, has been his team since he was 11 years old, the Iruki Donostialdea Bizikletan, where he has grown step by step until he became a professional cyclist. “I joined the team at the age of eleven and for me they have been and will continue to be part of my family. In addition to improving in sports, I have been able to enjoy cycling and the company of all the team members during all this time and that is something I will never forget. I think it’s fair to say thank you for everything I’ve received, they are part of everything I’m achieving”.

Every time the jump from the junior field to professionalism is more normalized, despite this Yago He is aware that he will have to continue learning and growing as a cyclist, in a group such as the Saris Rouvy Sauerland Team where you only work with young talents who seek to make the leap to a higher category, “It’s time to continue growing and learning a lot on the road, for this 2023 I would like to see what I am capable of doing on the continental field and with a clear objective to grow year by year. I am aware of the great leap from junior to professional, but if I’m here it’s because I think I have the level and I trust I can do well. For desire, work and illusion it will not be.

For his part, the new manager of Yago Aguirre in the Saris Rouvy Sauerland Team, the German Jörg Scherf, highly values Yago’s arrival in the team and they are confident that they will be able to participate in the growth of the young cyclist from San Sebastián.. “It is a great opportunity for us to be able to help a rider with as much talent as Yago Aguirre develop as a cyclist. Riders such as Floriam Storck and Johannes Adamietz have passed through our team, currently in Team DSM and Lotto Destiny respectively, and we would like Yago to follow in their footsteps. It is a great honor that a junior Spanish champion joins us, as well as being a great cyclist, we know that he is a great student and that fits perfectly into the philosophy of the project, we train cyclists and also people. We are aware that many teams have noticed Yago and that they will be watching his evolution, hopefully we can go very far hand in hand”.

Yago and his team’s debut this season will be at the beginning of March on Croatian soil, where the Saris Rouvy Sauerland Team will hold a pre-season staff and will participate in three races; Trofej Umag – Umag Trophy (1.2), Trofej Poreč – Poreč Trophy(1.2) and Istarsko Proljeće – Istrian Spring Trophy(2.2).
