Gabriel Batistuta referred to the possibility of Lionel Messi staying with his record as top scorer for the Argentine National Team in World Cups and assured that “now it is fair that someone else take it”, after holding it for 20 years.
“It’s a record that I had for 20 years and I enjoyed it,” Batistuta said in statements to the newspaper oléto add: “Now it’s fair that someone else take him and, if that other one is called Messi, he’s welcome.”
Bati’s goals were 10 in just 12 games in the three World Cups he played: four in the United States in 1994, five in France in 1998 and one in Korea-Japan in 2002.
“It makes me angry because I did not have many games. I played a first phase, a round of 16 and a quarter, that makes me very angry. I was not given a semifinal or something like that,” remarked the former attacker of the Albiceleste team.
Messi, with the three goals he celebrated in Qatar, reached nine goals in 23 games played during five World Cups: before they were one in Germany 2006, four in Brazil 2014 and one in Russia 2018. In South Africa 2010, the Flea did not convert.
