WHO Proposes 20% Budget Cut Amid US Funding Withdrawal Crisis

The World Health Organization is facing a financial crisis.
It wants to cut jobs and reduce its budget by over 20%.
This is due to the US cutting its funding.

The US was the largest donor to the WHO.
It provided around 18% of the organization’s funding.
In January, the US withdrew from the WHO.
It said the organization mishandled the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a WHO document, the US withdrawal has made the organization’s financial situation worse.
The document states that the WHO will have to cut its budget for 2026-27 from $5.3 billion to $4.2 billion.
This is a reduction of 21%.

The WHO has over 9,000 staff members.
More than a quarter of them are based in Geneva, Switzerland.
The organization plans to cut jobs at all levels and in all regions.
It will prioritize its work and resources by the end of April.

The WHO has started to set priorities and limit contract lengths to one year.
It is also trying to find additional funding from countries, private donors, and philanthropists.
