Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus: World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus tweeted that the attack on noted author Salman Rushdie is a cowardly and abominable act. I am shocked and deeply saddened by this. Ghebreyesus wrote in the fire that my prayers are with him and his loved ones.

Knife mounted on stage

Salman Rushdie was attacked during an event in New York City, USA on Friday. Rushdie, 75, born in Mumbai and a Booker Prize winner, was about to begin his lecture at an event at the Chautauqua Institute in western New York when the accused climbed onto the stage and punched Rushdie, then attacked him with a knife. Rushdie, who was seriously injured in the attack, is on a ventilator. Author Rushdie had faced death threats from Islamic extremists for years after writing “The Satanic Verses”. He was stabbed to death by Hadi Matar, a 24-year-old resident of New Jersey, at an event in western New York state.

Fatwa issued for Rushdie’s murder

After Rushdie’s fourth book, The Satanic Verses, came out in 1988, he had to go into hiding for nine years. Regarding this book, the then supreme religious leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khamenei accused Rushdie of insulting Islam, also issued a fatwa for Rushdie’s murder. Hadi Matar, 24, a New Jersey resident who attacked Salman Rushdie with a knife, has been arrested. New York State Police said the Criminal Bureau of Investigation arrested Matar on Friday on charges of attempted murder and assault. Matar is sent to the Chautauqua County Jail after being taken to a police office.
